Promote learning: We all know about it but what do we do to promote it effectively? Allow the kids to take their own decisions and even if they falter, relax. This way, you’ll not only allow the kids to enjoy themselves but also help them get imaginative.
Name every team: To effect better co-ordination of affairs, group the players into small teams. It’s also a good idea to name the teams for inculcating a feeling of closeness.
Evaluate failures and success: Define the standards against which the performance would be measured to coach youth soccer. Some rules to understand this are whether the kids are enjoying the sessions. The kids could be playing only for the sake of it or actually having fun. Are the kids getting the art of dribbling, passing and controlling the ball?
Give incentives: These keep the kids going and even the advanced players, for that matter. At the same time, incentives may not necessarily be sizeable. For instance awarding the winner team with an hour’s additional break or leaving early for the day. Also, never give individual rewards. This is because soccer is a sport where some players will always outperform others. Substitute it with rewarding team’s hard work.
Managing poor performance: It’s important in teaching soccer to carefully manage individual’s poor performance affecting the entire team. For example, confront the player who regularly comes late for the sessions. Reprimand him with any easy punishment to send a message to the remaining players.
This is applicable to the parents as well, few of which have a tendency to interfere in the team’s affairs. Don’t let it happen and give clear instructions. You are the coach and you will take decisions. But, involvement of parents to a certain level is also important.
Be in charge: Every single act of yours is closely observed by the players as it’s natural for them to copy you. So you better mend your ways. Always be nice and polite to team mates, fellow coaches, and opponents. Arrive at the field for the training sessions before the players reach. Do not disapprove of the players or the referee anytime during the practice matches.
